An old television royalty tariff gets a new settlement deadline

The Copyright Board settled payment and recordkeeping questions for the 2014 to 2018 television retransmission tariff after an appellate remittal.

Disputes about older television royalties can keep going long after the broadcasts. On September 25, 2026, the Copyright Board redetermined the transitional provisions of its 2014 to 2018 television retransmission tariff following a Federal Court of Appeal ruling. The remittal was limited. It wasn’t an invitation to reconsider the underlying royalty rates.\n\nThe revised tariff sets November 30, 2026 as the settlement date for additional royalties. It also addresses recordkeeping and audit obligations through December 31, 2027, while recognizing that records lawfully destroyed before issuance cannot be recreated. Those details matter when broadcasters and collecting societies revisit payments for broadcasts made years earlier.\n\nThis is a federal copyright tariff decision, not a fresh judgment on the merits of any individual retransmitter’s conduct. The original Copyright Board reasons and the September 26, 2026 Canada Gazette tariff provide the controlling text.
