Theatre Baddeck receives $400,000 for its permanent home

Canadian Heritage announced $400,000 for sound, lighting, accessibility and safety upgrades at the Cape Breton theatre.

Canadian Heritage announced $400,000 on October 23, 2026 to help Theatre Baddeck purchase and install equipment at its permanent venue in Cape Breton. The nonprofit theatre moved into the space in early 2025. Its next phase will add energy-efficient lighting, new flooring and draperies, wireless microphones, sound systems and assistive listening technology, along with recording and livestreaming equipment.

The project also includes systems that can coordinate sound, lighting and visual alerts during emergencies. Theatre Baddeck expects the improved venue to support additional professional productions, an arts education program and more year-round partnerships with local artists and community groups. Federal funding is directed at the venue's equipment and installation, with completion planned by March 2028.
