News brief

New federal asylum regulations take effect with a single online claims process

New federal regulations came into force on November 3, creating a single online asylum application process for claims made inland or at a port of entry and setting timelines for government reviews. The changes also address reinstating withdrawn claims, assistance for vulnerable claimants and access to work permits for people with eligible claims. These are rules now in force under an existing federal statute, rather than a new bill awaiting passage, and the Immigration and Refugee Board remains responsible for independently deciding protection claims.
