Prince Edward Island clarifies wetland compensation for development projects

Prince Edward Island announced an updated Wetland Conservation Policy on November 2 that formalizes compensation where wetland impacts can't be avoided, including a three-to-one restoration or creation option and a $60,000-per-acre contribution rate. A limited exemption is available for minor impacts, but the province says avoiding wetland damage remains the first priority. Landowners and developers should assess possible wetlands early, including sites not captured in provincial mapping, rather than treating compensation as automatic permission to build.
