News brief

Alberta auto insurance benchmarks took effect October 1

Alberta’s Automobile Insurance Rate Board has brought new industry benchmark schedules into effect for private passenger, commercial and motorcycle insurance. The September 16 bulletin applies from October 1, 2026, and concerns the data used to assess insurer rate filings.

Alberta’s Automobile Insurance Rate Board issued Bulletin 09-2026 on September 16, with industry benchmark schedules effective October 1, 2026. They cover private passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles and motorcycles, following the board’s annual review of industry experience through December 31, 2025. Insurers preparing rate filings should use the applicable current schedule and distinguish the board’s benchmark assumptions from any particular driver’s premium or claim entitlement. This is a regulatory rate-setting update, not a change to insurance coverage.
