Regulatory Update

Charities can comment on federal registration and compliance processes

Finance Canada and the CRA are seeking views on registration, digital services, compliance and revocation processes. Submissions close December 3, 2026.

Registered charities have until December 3, 2026, to contribute to a federal review of the rules and administration affecting their work. Finance Canada and the CRA opened the consultation on October 8. It covers registration, digital service delivery, audits and compliance, and revocation and objections. This is a request for feedback. The announcement doesn't replace existing obligations or promise a particular legislative result.

For a board, the practical opportunity is to identify a process that repeatedly consumes time or makes compliance harder and explain that experience with evidence. Registration delays, difficulties using digital services and the handling of objections fall within the stated scope. Cultural charities can participate alongside organizations in other fields. Submissions will be reviewed by both departments and are subject to access to information and privacy legislation. The government asks respondents to identify confidential portions and says it will make reasonable efforts to protect them.
