The Harvest Was Smaller Than Expected. Was Anything Actually Damaged?
A farmer's lost yield may be a real loss without answering whether crops were physically injured or a liability policy responds. Work through the evidence before choosing an insurance conclusion.
A farmer opens the yield monitor after harvest and sees a number nobody wanted. The crop came in well below the target used for fertilizer planning, cash flow and financing. The field agronomist had made recommendations in the spring. By October, the farmer is wondering whether the advice was negligent, while the agronomist's insurer wants to know whether the claim involves damage to property. Those aren't interchangeable questions. The farmer may have suffered a genuine financial loss, the agronomist may have given advice that deserves scrutiny, and the commercial general liability policy may still have a separate answer about what it insures. Working out the distinction begins with the field, not the policy certificate. Imagine that a custom applicator used the wrong chemical on one canola field.
