Alberta puts up to $1.5 million per project behind industry led skills training

Alberta is accepting proposals through October 30 for industry led training projects that address labour and skills gaps. Eligible projects can receive from $300,000 to $1.5 million.

Alberta is accepting proposals for a new round of industry skills funding, and the structure of the program makes it more interesting to HR than a conventional training subsidy. The Alberta Industry Skills Grant is open for applications until October 30, 2026. Eligible projects can receive at least $300,000 and as much as $1.5 million. The province describes the program as support for industry driven training that addresses current or emerging labour and skills shortages and produces benefits across an industry. That last requirement changes the kind of project employers should be thinking about. This is not simply a reimbursement program for one company's normal learning budget. The strongest fit is likely to be a training problem that several employers share and that is large enough to justify a coordinated solution. Eligible lead applicants include for profit employers, industry and sector associations, employer organizations, community economic development organizations, unions, postsecondary institutions, private career colleges and training providers. Alberta also says the lead applicant has to demonstrate the capacity to deliver workforce development projects effectively.
