An Alberta employer has been convicted after a worker was fatally injured while operating a manual machine lathe, and the facts are a stark reminder that some of the most serious workplace risks are attached to equipment that can become ordinary through repetition. The Government of Alberta says Rylex Machine & Supply Ltd. pleaded guilty after a worker was pulled onto a rotating work piece on a lathe. The offence occurred in Edmonton on March 4, 2024, and the conviction was entered on September 14, 2026. The company pleaded guilty to failing to provide safeguards where a worker could come into contact with moving or hazardous machinery. The financial penalty was $1,000 including the victim fine surcharge, and the company was placed on two years of enhanced regulatory supervision. The size of the fine is likely to attract attention, but it should not become the safety lesson. The more important fact is that the underlying hazard was rotating machinery and the legal contravention concerned safeguarding. Machine hazards are difficult precisely because they can be familiar.
