BC human rights complaints reach a record 3,676 as tribunal backlog grows

BC’s Human Rights Tribunal reports a record 3,676 new complaints and about 7,745 active complaints in fiscal 2025 to 2026, with procedural reforms aimed at delays.

The BC Human Rights Tribunal’s annual report, released October 14, 2026, records 3,676 new complaints in its fiscal year ending March 2026, the highest annual intake since the direct access system began. Active complaints rose from 6,253 to about 7,745. These figures cover cases at different stages of the process, not findings that discrimination occurred.

The Tribunal attributes much of the increase to approximately 640 additional filings compared with the previous year and the effect of government wide job action. It scheduled 1,707 mediations, reporting an overall settlement rate of about 56%, and expects revised screening and dismissal procedures to help reduce delays. Employers and complainants should account for the pressure on the system, but the report doesn't establish a timetable for any individual case.
