B.C. safety rules now clarify protections for volunteer firefighters

B.C. amendments effective October 1 clarify how occupational health and safety requirements apply to volunteer firefighters, society fire brigades and other fire personnel.

British Columbia changed its occupational health and safety rules for firefighting on October 1, 2026. WorkSafeBC says amendments to Part 31 of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation now align the regulation with the definitions of "worker" and "firefighter" in the Workers Compensation Act. The changes also clarify how safety requirements apply to society fire brigades and volunteer firefighters. A new term, "fire personnel," covers workers who perform fire related duties such as maintenance, training and inspection but who do not meet the Act's definition of firefighter. The practical point is scope.
