Altman v Faculty Association of Simon Fraser University, 2026 BCCA 415

The B.C. Court of Appeal permitted 2 faculty associations to intervene jointly on limited terms but rejected a different intervention that would broaden the appeal. The ruling didn't decide the validity of the underlying resolutions.

In Altman v Faculty Association of Simon Fraser University, 2026 BCCA 415, Justice Riley granted the Canadian Association of University Teachers and the Confederation of University Faculty Associations of British Columbia permission to intervene jointly. Their submissions were limited, and they couldn't introduce new evidence. The court refused the Canadian Lawyers for International Human Rights' application because it proposed expanding the appeal beyond the questions raised by the parties.

This ruling decided who could intervene and under what conditions. It didn't decide whether the underlying faculty association resolutions were inconsistent with the society's purposes. That substantive appeal remains separate. The court's actual orders appear at paragraphs 45 to 47 of the original reasons.
