CRA benefit chart connects taxable perks to payroll treatment

The federal reference maps common employee benefits and allowances to income-tax, CPP, EI, GST/HST and reporting treatment.

One benefit, several payroll questions

The Canada Revenue Agency’s taxable-benefits chart brings several administrative questions into one reference: whether a benefit or allowance is taxable, whether CPP contributions or EI premiums apply, how GST/HST is treated and how the amount is reported.

The chart covers common categories rather than announcing a single new rule. Its value is the connection between benefit design and the payroll treatment applied when a benefit is provided.

A current administrative reference

The underlying treatment depends on the particular benefit, the way it is provided and the detailed CRA guidance linked from the chart. The source should therefore be read as a navigation and classification tool, not a substitute for the specific rule governing a benefit.
