News brief

Nova Scotia hospital expansion provides training ground for trades apprentices

Nova Scotia reported on November 3 that 159 people working on its QEII Halifax Infirmary expansion were new to the skilled trades, including 86 registered apprentices pursuing certification. The project has a plan to direct at least 10% of working hours to apprentices and journeypersons from underrepresented groups, while the province says 34% of its apprentices currently identify with those groups. The two figures use different measures, and employers planning large construction projects should consider both access to training and how participation is tracked.
