PEI's rural hiring program covers up to half of wages on one position, capped at $18 an hour

Prince Edward Island's Rural Enhancement Employment Program supports up to 20 weeks of wages for one position per year at eligible businesses outside Greater Charlottetown and Summerside's urban core.

Prince Edward Island's Rural Enhancement Employment Program, known as REEP, helps eligible rural businesses pay for a new hire. The province's program page, published March 3, 2026, says applications for 2026 to 2027 are being accepted. It isn't a fresh announcement. It's a program that's been open since early March, and the page describes its purpose as stimulating economic activity and business development outside cities while creating long term rural employment. The program is open to registered private businesses located outside the Greater Charlottetown area, a boundary the province says includes Stratford and Cornwall, and outside the urban core of Summerside. A business in either of those zones falls outside the program as described. Employers elsewhere on the Island, including rural communities and towns beyond those boundaries, are the intended audience. The page also sets out priorities. New businesses, newly expanded rural businesses and positions with the greatest potential to become permanent full time jobs get priority. That language signals the province wants the subsidy to lead to lasting jobs, not only to fill a short seasonal gap.
