Regulatory Update

WorkSafeBC revises incident reporting guideline and posts new respirator seal guidance ahead of November 6 rule

WorkSafeBC's September 17 guideline update touches three separate things: an existing duty to report serious incidents immediately, revised respirator selection guidance, and a new guideline tied to OHS Regulation amendments that take effect November 6, 2026.

WorkSafeBC published new and revised occupational health and safety guidelines on September 17, 2026. Three of them matter to British Columbia employers, and they sit at different points on the legal timeline. One interprets a duty that already applies. One updates guidance on a regulatory change that took effect earlier this year. One is written in anticipation of a regulatory amendment that isn't yet in force. Keeping those three apart is the main task for anyone reading the September update page. WorkSafeBC says the new and revised guidelines were posted for a 60 day preliminary feedback period. That's a consultation on the guidance wording. It doesn't change the status of the underlying legal requirements. The first item is the immediate notification guideline, which deals with accidents and incidents that must be reported immediately under section 68(1) of the Workers Compensation Act. The current guideline is marked Preliminary Revision September 17, 2026.
